When granted, an annulment treats the marriage as if it never actually occurred due to circumstances rendering it void at inception. The six most common reasons to receive an annulment include:
1. A spouse was underage (16) at the time of the marriage;
2. A spouse lacks the mental capacity to enter into a marital contract;
3. A spouse was forced to get married and did not voluntarily consent;
4. A spouse was tricked into getting marriage by fraud;
5. Spouses learned they were too closely biologically related to be married; and,
6. A spouse was still legally married to another at the time of the marriage.
Spouses who simply change their mind may not qualify for an annulment.
